Ways to Find Good and Affordable Dog Daycare

Just like there is daycare for children, there is also daycare for dogs. If your dog gets bored and lonely being home all day while you are at work, dog daycare may be the answer. Dog daycare provides socialization for your dog and helps him release pent-up energy that would otherwise cause him to be aggressive or destructive. Each dog daycare is different, so if you are considering dog daycare as an option, it is best to check out several facilities and choose the one that is optimal for your dog.

Types of dog daycare
There are two main types of dog daycare: in-home and commercial. An in-home dog daycare is run by an individual who may also own dogs. The dogs are allowed in the home and the person in charge typically provides more attention than those at a commercial facility. In-home dog daycare is generally cheaper and there is often a much lower number of dogs there than at a commercial facility. However, outdoor time may be limited.

A commercial dog daycare is more expensive but is best suited for an active dog. The staff keeps the dogs busy with games, running and socialization. There may be 20 or more dogs at a commercial facility at any given time.

What to look for
If you find a facility you like, ask if you can take a tour. The facility should be accommodating and have no problems scheduling a tour. If the staff sounds hesitant to do so, the facility may have something to hide, and it may be time to move on. While at a facility, look for signs of cleanliness. Are there any pungent odors? Do the other dogs look happy?

Dog DaycareAsk about the facility’s rules and schedule. Do they fit with the dog’s needs? If your dog is hyper, is he allowed sufficient time to play and exercise? What is the protocol if your dog is sick or injured? Does the facility offer fresh water at all times?

Does your dog have special needs, such as a medical condition that must be monitored? It is important that the facility’s staff is able to accommodate your dog’s needs. If your dog needs a special diet or medication, be sure to let them know.

Requirements
What does the facility require of your dog? Most likely, certain vaccinations will be needed. In addition, your dog will need to be spayed or neutered. Do you bring your own food or does the dog daycare provide it? Are favorite toys allowed? Be sure that you follow all the facility’s requirements before starting your dog at daycare.
