The Shiba Inu: A Dog of Brave Lineage

The Shiba Inu comes from Japan. A breed of courage and endurance, the Shiba dog was originally created to hunt small wild game as well as bear and boar. The name “Shiba” in Japanese means brushwood, which could account for the mountainous, dense undergrowth area where the breed developed; Inu means “dog” in Japanese.

World War II greatly decimated the breed due to the bombings as well as disease.  However, after the war, many people worked diligently to ensure the Shiba’s survival. The American Kennel Club (AKC) did not recognize the breed until 1992.

Considered muscular, compact, alert and agile, the breed is noted for its excellent watchdog qualities; it is often very wary of strangers. It can also be aloof and distrusting of other dogs. However, this breed is loyal and loving towards its owner and makes a very special companion. Though Shibas have an independent nature, they enjoy being with their owners and with proper obedience training and handling. They do well in agility and tracking events.

The Shiba dog’s waterproof, double-coat requires frequent brushing; it sheds heavily during various seasons. However, regular bathing is not necessary as a Shiba is quite clean; in fact, it often avoids water puddles. In addition, frequent bathing can diminish the coat’s natural waterproof quality. The dog’s short, course outer coat is most often reddish in color, sometimes with a black overlay or black and tan markings. The undercoat ranges from cream to gray, and there may be white on the legs and on the tip of the dog’s tail. The furry tail curves over the Shiba’s back end.shiba dog

This active dog requires regular exercise, either with daily walks or in a fenced area. This medium-sized, compact-framed dog can adapt to living in an apartment as long as it’s provided with the exercise needed to expend its energy. Obedience training at a young age is highly recommended.

The smallest of the Japanese breeds; Shiba males range in size from 14 to 16 inches (36 to 41 cm) and weigh 18 to 25 pounds (8 to 11 kg); females are smaller. They are part of the AKC’s Non-Sporting group.

A dog of great dignity and confidence, the Shiba Inu makes a wonderful companion and an excellent watchdog. This breed is noted for its playfulness, and a well-adjusted Shiba dog can do well with children. When provided with necessary attention, proper training, and regular exercise, these dogs offer affection to their owners and serve them with loyalty and courage.
