Pomeranian Dogs: Lots of Energy in a Small Package

Energetic and exuberant, the little Pomeranian dog provides a special companionship for people.  Considered a toy breed, the Pomeranian ranges in size from 3 to 7 pounds (1.4 to 3.2 kg) and 7 to 12 inches (18 to 30.5 cm) tall.

The Pom, as its known, came from Europe’s Poland and Germany region and was originally used for herding sheep; the breed was larger then, weighing about 30 pounds (13.6 kg). Its double-coat speaks to its Nordic ancestry, possessing a short, dense undercoat and a longer, harsher outer coat. A plumed tail and fox-like facial expression are characteristics of the breed. The coat needs consistent grooming and brushing as Poms shed frequently. Coat color varies, but reds and oranges are very popular.

The perky Pomeranian possesses a very outgoing personality. Eager to please and affectionate, the Pomeranian is a popular breed for both companion and show animal.  Although small in size, Poms do not require a great amount of exercise. However, they are energetic little dogs and require both attention from their people and a daily walk.

The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1888. England considered the Pomeranian a Spitz dog at first. The breed gained popularity as a household pet after Queen Victoria brought a Pom home after traveling in Italy.

Considered intelligent little dogs that like to please their people, Poms respond well to training, and can make great family dogs if trained properly. Compact, cocky and commanding, the Pomeranian competes well in competition events, such as conformation and cart pulling (small carts!).  Alert, inquisitive and active, they can make good little watchdogs and can also learn tricks quickly. Because of their small size, they readily adapt to apartment living. However, some tend to be barkers, which doesn’t bode well with neighbors.

Poms are big dogs in small packages, filled with energy and affection, and alert enough to provide a warning bark when strangers come to the home.
